About Evora
Évora Day Trip from Lisbon
Évora Day Trip from Lisbon
Évora is a City-Museum and World Heritage site
With a very well-preserved historic center, Évora is a World Heritage site since 1986. It is the best example of a city from the golden age of Portugal (16th century), not destroyed by the 1755 earthquake.
But the history of Évora is very old. Prehistoric even. Throughout the city there are traces of very ancient civilizations: Celts, Romans, Muslims, Jews and Christians.
The Roman Temple is the most famous monument in Evora
Built on one of the highest points in the city, and 2,000 years old; it is one of the most important historical ruins in Portugal.
Dedicated to Emperor Augustus, it became a safe in the 14th century and a public butchery until the 19th, when the first archaeological excavations in Portugal were then carried out there.
The Chapel of Bones is unique in this size in Portugal and rare in Europe
The striking phrase at the imposing portal leaves no one indifferent: "We bones that are here, for yours we are waiting." Symbol of a Macabre Heritage that dominates mainly the south of Portugal, it is a funerary exhibition space built by the Franciscans in the 17th century.
Thousands of bones cover the walls and ceiling of this chapel, taken from cemeteries in Évora - find out the meaning with us!
The 1st stone of Évora Cathedral was laid in 1186
The early cathedral, of which we have no trace, may well have been an adaptation of the Great Mosque from when Évora was under Islamic rule, not far from where the current cathedral now stands.
Combination of the Romanesque style with Gothic, the cathedral was consecrated in 1308. It is the largest in the country, with unique artistic elements in Portugal, such as the dome, the sculpted portal and the cloister, the 16th-century organ, and the Grand-chapel (a jewel of the 18th-century Portuguese Baroque style).

Fabulous private walking tour of Evora with great wine tasting
"This tour gives you everything you need on a day trip to Evora. We were picked up at our Lisbon hotel in a comfortable and clean Mercedes. Evora has a long and interesting history and our guide Sandra brought it to life. A magnificent journey through history, seasoned with good wines. She was the absolute best! So knowledgeable and incredibly friendly. She also found a great restaurant for us. The winery was beautiful and the selection of wines was good. This is the best way to get an authentic taste of Evora in a day. It was a must for us travelling to Portugal!"

Outstanding day trip to Evora from Lisbon with wine tasting
"Best tour of our family trip to Portugal. Highlights include history, regional cuisine, winery and our guide. She was a wealth of knowledge and provided a private walking tour at Evora which we enjoyed immensely. What a great way to see the Chapel of the Bones, the narrow Old streets and alleys, a Roman arch and a temple. Wow. And the wine tasting was another fantastic experience. The winery was not crowded and the wines were great. We felt like we got the most out of a day in Evora and we enjoyed all of it. The landscape, the food, the wine, the walking tour. I would highly recommend this tour if you like vineyards and historic towns."
